Mind Your Mood

Helping users better understand their mental health

Koa Health · 2021 · Product Designer

Mind Your Mood was designed in record time (3 months from wireframing to launch). It is a collaboration between UCLP, Koa Health and a steering committee of NHS IAPT coordinators, private GPs in the UK and mental health providers from Doctor Care Anywhere.

We created a tool to help individuals and university students better understand their mental health by guiding them through clinical questionnaires designed to assess the symptoms of some common mental health conditions.

There is a need to deliver a front-door to help direct students to the right level of support

  • Students are suffering in silence and there are no large scale assessments available to help them determine their current mental health status that could lead to assistance

  • Students may be unaware of the resources available to them for accessing mental health care outside of university counselling services unless they have proactively sought help

  • Existing counselling services would not be able to handle the demand of a large scale assessment and triage of university students to mental health services

  • There is no existing large-scale or centralised triage to IAPT services or otherwise for quick access to mental health services

Guiding users through clinical questionnaires

Mind Your Mood uses validated clinical questionnaires to help users better understand their mental health.
These are clinical questionnaires that couldn’t be modified, so we made sure they were easy to follow, track and complete.

Offering comprehensive results

The results display three different scales from three different questionnaires: depression, anxiety and personal and social impairment symptoms. We defined a common scale that would help the users understand their results and put them into perspective.

We iterated on finding a good solution that would display the users’ answers to the questionnaires in a comprehensive way.

Connecting with services that provide assistance

Once users get an understanding of their mental health, Mind Your Mood signposts them towards appropriate public and private resources where they can access mental health support.

A private and easy to access experience

We made sure students’ personal data was carefully protected, but at the same time we ensured their results could be accessed just by them at any moment in the future.
